What 2023 Taught Us? Special Edition

The key financial lessons from 2023

Simple graphic of the week

📣 Let’s start at the beginning of 2023.

Think about if we told you the following things would happen in the next 12 months:

  • Interest rates would go up four times.

  • Inflation would stay really high.

  • Many experts were saying there might be a global recession.

  • Three medium-sized U.S. banks would fail, including the third biggest banking failure ever.

  • The war in Ukraine would still be happening with no end in sight.

  • A surprise new war would start in Israel.

  • There would be major strikes in the U.S. entertainment and auto industries.

  • People's debt in the U.S. would reach the highest it's ever been.

  • Housing would become even more unaffordable.

If you knew all this bad news was coming, you'd probably expect that investors would have a tough year.

But look at how the stock market has done this year:

  • Dow Jones: +14% (all-time high)

  • S&P 500: +26% (all-time high)

  • NASDAQ: +45% (almost at an all-time high)

If you look at history, you'll see that this happens a lot.

The stock market goes up when the economy looks bad (and goes down when it looks good.)

That's because the stock market is unpredictable. It always has been and always will be.

But the one thing we can predict is that in the long run, the stock market goes up.

That's why we named this newsletter "Wealth Uncorked." It reminds us to focus on the only time frame that really matters: generational long term wealth.

It's not easy to do, especially in our world where everything is connected. There are always reasons to be worried in the short term.

But history shows that people who are optimistic in the long term end up doing well. Those who can stay invested even when things look bad end up making the most of compounding.

This year, 2023, reminded us once again that investing is not easy.

And that's okay.

We hope you have success in investing in 2024 and beyond!
